ANTH 171: Introduction to Monkeys and Apes

This course examines our closest relatives, the Primates (prosimians, monkeys and apes)  -- with whom we share high intelligence, complex communication systems, diverse feeding adaptations and diets, and a reliance on social groups. By studying the behavior and evolution of non-human primates, anthropologists hope to identify the features that unite us with the Primate Order.  We will learn about the evolutionary history of primates, as well as about studies of primates in their natural habitats.  We will see how anatomy and ecology shape primate behavior.
