AAD 252: Art and Gender

Cultures view the relationship between gender and the arts in different ways.  Some cultures use art to understand gender; others challenge understanding derived in this way.  AAD 252 introduces socio-cultural factors that influence gender in the arts.  We will consider gender in art by analyzing the influence of education, social status, subject matter, criticism, and public perceptions. Additionally, we will explore the social, political, aesthetic, and economic factors that influence the use of gendered terms to define art and artists. Specific artists and their works will be explored in the context of gender, and students will be encouraged to adopt a critical perspective regarding the arts, gender, and culture.  AAD 252 has no prerequisites.
